It is with deep disappointment that we confirm that the proposed South African Pavilion for the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (2026) will not proceed.
This is a profoundly sad outcome for the visual arts sector and for all those who hoped to see South Africa represented on one of the world’s most significant cultural platforms. The intention behind the project was to explore a transparent, sector-led public–private model for international cultural representation. It is deeply regrettable that circumstances beyond the control of many involved have brought this initiative to an end.
Latitudes Online’s involvement in the project was limited strictly to a media and early-stage strategic support role. Following the termination of the partnership between Art Periodic South Africa and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), Latitudes no longer holds any mandate or role in relation to the Pavilion.
Latitudes was not involved in curatorial decision-making, the evaluation or selection of proposals, the commissioning of artwork, or any discussions with the Department regarding artistic content. Those processes were conducted independently by the appointed administering body, Art Periodic South Africa, and the Selection Committee, in accordance with their respective mandates.
All subsequent developments that resulted in the project being halted by DSAC occurred outside Latitudes’ authority, visibility, and control. Latitudes did not participate in, influence, or have oversight of any decisions relating to the content, presentation, or viability of the proposed Pavilion.
Latitudes contributed time, platform, and professional capacity to the project on a fully pro bono basis, in good faith and in support of the visual arts sector. Our involvement was motivated by a shared hope that this initiative could strengthen South Africa’s presence on an important international cultural stage.
We remain saddened by this outcome and grateful to the artists, curators, Selection Committee members, and sector colleagues who contributed their energy, expertise, and care to the process.
This statement is issued by Latitudes Online in its independent capacity to inform the sector. It is not an official communication from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Thank you to all who supported the project.
