Certain Sense of Settlement, Certain Sense of Self

Certain Sense of Settlement, Certain Sense of Self guides the audience on a profound exploration of the intertwined themes of home and self through the evocative works of three emerging artists from Southern Africa. The exhibition offers a kaleidoscopic glimpse into the complex web of emotions and experiences underlying our endless search for belonging.

The artworks echo with whispers of memory and longing. Using everyday objects and humble appliances as both medium and subject, each piece becomes a vessel for contemplating the delicate dance between comfort and unease within the domestic sphere. From a stove's harsh burns to an empty chair's deafening silence, these artifacts of daily life evoke a potent blend of nostalgia and disconnection. They invite viewers to delve into their own recollections of home and confront feelings of alienation.

The artworks guide viewers through reflections on home, intertwining memories with dreams to blur the lines between reality and imagination. Amid familiar domestic warmth, they bravely explore complexities shaping our sense of belonging - from the struggles of displacement to tensions simmering beneath domestic tranquility's surface.

Join us on this transformative journey, where each artwork acts as a catalyst for introspection and contemplation. As we navigate the exhibition, may we find solace in our shared longing for a place to call home and gain deeper insight into the complexities of our own identities in relation to the surrounding world.

MEET THE CURATOR

Based in Gaborone, Botswana, the city of my birth and current residence, I am deeply intertwined with its artistic fabric. As both a curator and practicing artist, my approach to curatorial practice is enriched by my firsthand experience within the art making process. In my dual role as an executive board member of the Art Residency Centre and a working artist, I work with fellow art practitioners to provide developmental opportunities and support within our community. Through this work, I strive to cultivate an environment where creativity thrives. Central to my curatorial practice is the desire to facilitate open dialogue on diverse topics through contemporary art, aiming to challenge stigma and societal norms. I am also interested in showcasing the value of contemporary art both locally and internationally, highlighting its role in exploring history, identity, and societal complexities. I endeavor to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary art, recognizing its potential to inspire change and foster connections within our community.
