Steel Wool and Other Paradoxes

"Mosadi o Tshwara Thipa ka Bogaleng," is inspired by the Setswana idiom that translates to "A woman holds the knife on the sharp side of the blade." This powerful saying embodies the strength, resilience, unwavering faith and the courage inherent in womanhood passed down through generations.
In today's world, the modern woman is a blur of activity, constantly pressured to be all things to all people. This exhibition delves into the multifaceted aspects of womanhood and femininity, exploring the rich tapestry of identity across generations. It highlights how women navigate and confront life's challenges, showing both the changes and the enduring struggles they face. The idiom "Mosadi o Tshwara Thipa ka Bogaleng" also prompts a deeper reflection: as women, are we holding the blade to be cut, or to throw the dart? Do we choose to release the blade and not play the game? Ultimately, our choices define who we are and shape how we choose to live our lives.
Our featured female artists share in their art practices not only to celebrate the remarkable resilience of women but also serves as a call to action to reflect on society’s portrayal of women. Latitudes Centre for the Arts honors the women who hold the knife by the sharp side, who face life's challenges with unwavering strength, poise and continue to inspire us all in different spheres and ways in life.
